Career Fields Spotlight – Sales Engineer

Sales engineers serve as the link between engineering and sales and play a crucial role in marketing complex technical products and solutions. Their main responsibility is to understand customer requirements, evaluate them from a technical perspective, and translate them into appropriate proposals. They combine in-depth technical expertise with business acumen and guide the entire sales process—from the initial contact through the proposal phase to the signing of the contract.

In their day-to-day work, sales engineers maintain close communication with customers, the design department, project management, and other specialized departments. They analyze technical requirements, advise customers on customized solutions, and present products and concepts in a clear and compelling manner. In addition, they prepare technical proposals, calculate project costs, and assist in determining feasibility, costs, and delivery times. They are also frequently involved in negotiations and represent their company at trade shows or during client meetings.

To be successful as a sales engineer, a technical degree—for example, in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or mechatronics—as well as a strong interest in sales-related tasks are essential. Strong communication skills, persuasiveness, and a confident demeanor are just as important as the ability to explain complex technical concepts in an understandable way. A keen sense of customer needs and market requirements rounds out the profile.

Analytical thinking and a focus on solutions also play a key role, particularly in the development of customer-specific concepts. Sales engineers must be able to adapt flexibly to different types of clients and keep both technical and business aspects in mind. Initiative, a willingness to travel, and a structured approach to work are additional qualities that are advantageous in this diverse professional field.
