Last Wednesday, things got very real for us again: Mechanical engineering students from the University of Wuppertal took their final exam in the elective course “Special-Purpose Machine Design” right here at our facility.
After a winter semester that provided in-depth insights into the practical aspects of special-purpose machine construction, the task now was to translate theory into a real-world solution. The project task: Develop a handling system that removes thin cardboard separators from a box within a few seconds, transports them safely, and places them precisely and without damage onto an existing layer of springs in a spring-making machine.
The requirements included not only viable concepts, but also a clear focus on process reliability, simple mechanics, cost optimization, and the targeted use of sensor technology. Through in-depth product research and creative discussion, a variety of innovative solutions were developed, which were ultimately presented and evaluated in the form of posters. Based on, among other things, functionality, cost-effectiveness, creativity, and presentation quality.
The practical exam has been an integral part of the partnership between MKW GmbH and BUW for many years. We are always delighted to provide aspiring engineers with real-world mechanical engineering challenges, and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their dedication!
